This hat pattern requires a slightly thicker / bulkier yarn, a six weight is used in the one pictured. It is also worked on circular needles. Other than that all you will need is a stitch marker or two depending on your needs. The pattern for the design uses six stitches but the designer said to cast on multiples of four.

quick to knit - great timing as I want to knit up a couple of different looking hats in time for Christmas -- have the feeling I shall be staying awake 24-7 the next week

Looks like the perfect hat to knit for winter. Easy stitch and with the bigger needles, it will knit up quickly.
