Small and Clever Baby Set

What's better than a baby boy hat knitting pattern? One that comes with matching mittens and booties, of course! This too-cute-for-words Small and Clever Hat, Mittens and Bootie Set makes an exquisite gift for a baby shower. And given its classic design, the colors can easily be adapted for a girl baby, too.

This patterns is so sweet, perhaps not as hard to do as it is saying: "Intermediate"? I will try to have a go. Looks so nice. Thank you "PICKLES"!

This set looks adorable. Unfortunately, I've tried three times to make the booties & just can't make sense of the instructions. I don't understand the part about subtracting stitches. I assume it means to reduce one stitch, but it's not clear whether this means reduc one at the beginning of each row or only every other row. And if every other row, which end is "subtracted", i.e., the beginning or end of the row?
